Veronica was suggested to travel First Class. Bought ticket to Desenzano via Genoa and Milan. Walked down to Italian Riviera at Ventimiglia and had a beer and rose. Could see French Riviera. Met 'Pat's friends' on station at Ventimiglia.
Lake Garda round trip. Spectacular ferry rides starting from Desenzano to Malcesine. Early morning, waters calm. This apparently is the calmest part of the lake.
Malcesine port is beautiful. Short walk to Monte Baldo Funivia (cable car) station. Walking up to the station, I was thinking of a romantic time in the little empty car with my wife. MMM such thoughts which I was game enough to mention out loud. "I was thinking of that too" says Veronica. Our pace quickened as we moved to get to the cable car. Talk about the Mile High Club! Alas, we didn't expect 10 zillion people to be queued up.
Ferry then to Riva at top of lake. 65kms from Densenzano. Found bus station after long walk, asking at Tourisme as well as people in street. Winding narrow road hugged lake edge. Absolutely spectacular. Protocol it seemed was bus going south gives way to bus coming north. Interesting on blind corners!
Veronica walked to Rocca Scaligera at Sirmione about 7kms flat some along lake edge. I hired a bike from the hotel. Very good hydrid. Looked around, went into fort. Veronica went up the tower, I stayed below. V caught bus back and I rode. Met Veronica at the regular trattoria for lunch. Excellent place, and locals in at siesta time.
